1. Externalise Your Job Title!
Prioritise the job title keywords that professionals with suitable experience would search for on a job website over what you call the role in-house.
Remember, when a candidate starts their search, they will look for the most common job title associated with that role. Don't lose the majority of your audience before you even begin!
2. Engage the Reader!
Don’t start your advert with a description of your company and what it does. Begin by addressing the reader on their qualities, motivation, and/or impact.
A quick sense check on this to count how many times the advert states 'we' compared to how many times it refers to 'you'. If you can get to three 'you' before three 'we' - you're on the right track.
3. Refine Your Requirements!
‘Desirables’ or ‘nice to haves’ confuse the reader. Just focus on the essential, minimum experience and qualification requirements needed for shortlisting.
You're looking for the 'right' candidate, and listing everything you might need alienates suitable candidates.
4. Inclusive Language!
To encourage DE&I, avoid alluding to an “ideal candidate” and steer clear of gender-associated clichés such as 'strong', 'man-management', and 'caring'.
You probably don't realise, that whoever is writing the advert, writes from their own perspective, and will subconsciously attract more people like them!
5. Less is More!
Aim for 400-600 words. Job descriptions feature long lists of duties, but a job advert should focus on why someone would benefit from doing it for you.
We have tested thousands of job adverts and the job adverts (for the same role) with less than 600 words perform at least 30% better than the lengthier version.
